Why keywords matter for engineers
Recruiters and hiring managers often search their applicant tracking system for the specific technologies and skills a role requires. For software engineers, that usually means languages, frameworks, tools, and practices. If your resume does not contain the terms someone is searching for, it may not appear — even when you have the experience. The fix is not to stuff your resume with buzzwords, but to make sure the skills you genuinely have are stated in the words employers actually use.
Categories of keywords to consider
Think in a few buckets and pull only what applies to you: programming languages (for example, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Go, Java); frameworks and libraries (React, Node.js, Spring, Django); data stores (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB); cloud and infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform); and practices and concepts (REST APIs, CI/CD, system design, testing, observability). The exact set depends entirely on the job you are targeting — always start from the posting.
Place keywords where they are credible
Keywords carry the most weight when they appear in context. Rather than listing forty technologies in a skills section you never reference again, weave the important ones into your experience bullets: "Built REST APIs in Node.js serving 10M+ daily requests" is more convincing than "Node.js" sitting alone in a list. Keep a concise skills section for scannability, but let your accomplishments prove you have actually used the tools.
Tailor to each role — and stay honest
A generic resume rarely matches any single posting well. Before applying, compare your resume against the job description and adjust which skills you emphasize. If the role centers on cloud infrastructure, make sure your relevant cloud experience is visible near the top. The one rule that never bends: only include skills you can speak to in an interview. Keywords help you get found; honesty and genuine experience are what get you hired.
